Rick Mosteller’s career in the tile industry began in 1997, when he started as a ceramic tile setter’s helper. Like many skilled tradesmen, he learned the business from the ground up—carrying tile, mixing thinset and grout, preparing work areas, and assisting experienced installers. Over time, he learned the details that make the difference in a quality installation, from accurate measuring and careful layout to proper installation techniques and finishing.

After several years of hands-on training, Rick became a full-time tile setter, working primarily with custom home builders throughout Southern Maryland. His work included the installation of ceramic, porcelain, marble, and other tile products in bathrooms, showers, kitchens, floors, and custom residential projects.

Rick later stepped away from installation for several years to manage the warehouse for a major Maryland tile distributor. That experience gave him another perspective on the industry, allowing him to expand his knowledge of tile products, setting materials, manufacturers, and changing installation standards while developing relationships throughout the tile industry.

Eventually, Rick returned to the trade and established his own tile company in Maryland. For several years, he worked directly with homeowners and custom home builders, providing professional tile installation backed by years of hands-on experience and product knowledge.

After relocating to North Carolina, Rick once again stepped away from the trade and moved into retail leadership with Target, serving as an Executive Team Lead and managing teams and operations at the largest Target location in the district. The experience strengthened something that had always been an important part of his work—customer service, communication, organization, and accountability.

But skilled trades have a way of calling you back.

After years of working for others, Rick decided it was time to return to the craft he had spent decades learning and once again build a business of his own.



Today, Mosteller Custom Tile Works brings together Rick’s extensive tile installation experience, product knowledge, leadership background, and commitment to customer service. From the preparation behind the tile to the final grout line, Rick believes quality craftsmanship comes from taking the time to do the job correctly—not simply getting it done.

More than 25 years after carrying his first box of tile, Rick still believes in doing it right the first time.
